The Downtown Cabaret Theatre is an impressive example of the commitment to the downtown area. Originating from Sacred Heart University, where it achieved several successful seasons, the theatre company, led by Claude McNeal, made the move to the downtown area in 1975. Alexander Hawley, Samuel Hawley, Norwick Goodspeed, Mayor Nicholas Panuzio, Leete Doty and other business and civic leaders saw the importance of having a professional theatre company in the area. To make the move happen, the assembly room of the former YWCA was converted into a theatre, installing a balcony and air conditioning. The Downtown Cabaret Theatre has a long history of supporting the downtown area. Welcome to the Wonderland Of Ice! This city-owned facility, which first opened its doors in 1967, has been a treasured part of the Bridgeport, CT community for over fifty years. Recently, a capital improvement project added a second National Hockey League-sized skating rink and a new curling facility, alongside renovations of the existing locker rooms, restrooms, and old lobby. Families of all ages have been drawn to this special facility, with approximately 800 youth players and 300 adult league participants making use of the two sheets of ice. The rink is also home to the Fairfield Prep Varsity and JV hockey teams, Fairfield High School Boys and Girls Varsity hockey teams, Laurelton Hall Girls Varsity hockey team, and the Sacred Heart Men’s Club Hockey teams. John Winthrop School is located in the North End of Bridgeport, Connecticut. This city is the largest in the state with a population of 140,000 and a school population of more than 23,000. The school first opened as an elementary school in 1955 and a middle school wing was added in the late 1960s. Today, the school serves nearly 680 students and a staff total of 55. Named for John Winthrop, Jr., the colonial governor of Connecticut from 1657 to 1676, the school honors the memory of a man whose father, John Winthrop, Sr., served as a colonial governor of Massachusetts and was the first person from North America to be invited to the prestigious Royal Society. This historical landmark has been educating students since 1955.
