North Carolina, or NC for short, is a magical land where mountains kiss the sky and beaches whisper to the ocean. It's a place where wild ponies run free on islands, and shiny skyscrapers reach for the stars in bustling cities. 

In this wonderland, there's a quirky group of kids, known as the "Green Thumb Brigade". These kids are not your ordinary run-of-the-mill children. Oh, no! They are garden wizards, plant whisperers, and flower fairies. Their mission? To turn every backyard, schoolyard, and even some rooftops, into a colorful, fragrant paradise.

Leading the brigade is a character as quirky as they come, Soil Sally. Don't let her name fool you, though. She might sound like she's all about dirt, but she's also a master of the green. With a garden hoe in one hand, a watering can in the other, and an army of earthworms that follow her every command, she guides our little gardening warriors.

Together, they plant sunflowers that reach up to tickle the sun, create vegetable patches that make even the grumpiest broccoli-hater drool, and breed roses so fragrant that bees come from miles around. These children from North Carolina, with their muddy knees and sun-kissed cheeks, transform the world around them one seed at a time.

So if ever you're in NC, and you see a tomato plant growing in an old cowboy boot or a smiling sunflower winking at you from a rooftop, you'll know the Green Thumb Brigade has been there. And if you ever fancy joining them, Soil Sally and her earthworm sidekicks are always looking for new recruits.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Swift Nature Camp an overnight camp for boys and girls ages 6-15 located in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin. 

 I’m Lonnie, the Camp Director, and I’m thrilled to share what makes SNC such a special place for kids and families alike. For nearly 30 years, our mission has been to create an environment where children can grow, discover, and make lifelong memories. Here at camp, we focus on friendship, personal development, and a deep connection to nature—all in a fun, supportive, and adventurous setting. All this without cell phones
One of the things that sets Swift Nature Camp apart is our focus on fostering independence and confidence. Whether it’s trying a new activity like canoeing, taking on a leadership role in a group project, or simply navigating life away from home, camp provides endless opportunities for personal growth. We celebrate each camper’s unique personality and encourage them to step outside their comfort zone in a safe and nurturing way. Seeing kids gain new skills and pride in their accomplishments is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

For our youngest campers, Discovery Camp is an especially magical experience. Designed only for first-time campers ages 6-12, this shorter program gives kids a chance to experience the joys of camp life in a way that’s just right for them. It’s amazing to watch these kids try new things—from learning about the natural world to singing campfire songs—and leave camp with big smiles and even bigger stories to tell. Discovery Camp is often the beginning of a long and cherished relationship with SNC, and we’re so proud to see those first-time campers grow into confident and capable young people.

Another cornerstone of Swift Nature Camp is our connection to the environment. We believe that nature isn’t just a backdrop for camp; it’s a teacher, a playground, and a source of endless wonder. Through hands-on activities like pond studies, wildlife observation, and outdoor adventures, campers develop an appreciation for the natural world that stays with them long after camp ends. The Camp Zoo is always a favorite, campers can even adopt a pet while at camp.Our goal is to inspire kids to become curious, mindful stewards of the environment.

At Swift Nature Camp, there’s never a dull day! With hundreds of land and water activities, campers are always engaged and excited. On land, some favorites include the Lego Cabin, Arts & Crafts, Archery, and exploring the Nature Center. On the water, campers learn Canoeing, Fishing, and Swimming, but the absolute favorites are Tubing behind the boat and jumping off the Water Trampoline. Never is there a dull day because every day is packed with fun, adventure, and opportunities to try something new.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the amazing friendships that form here. SNC is a place where kids truly feel like they belong. Campers and counselors alike bring warmth, kindness, and enthusiasm to everything we do, creating a strong sense of community. Whether it’s cheering each other on during a game, collaborating on a creative project, or sharing laughs around the campfire, the bonds formed at Swift Nature Camp are something truly special.

The 4-H Rural Life Center is an incredible part of Halifax County’s history. This facility preserves the original smokehouse, barn, chicken coop, cannery, washroom, water pump house, and dairy barn. To top it off, there is even an antique farm equipment museum and an old saw mill built in 1929. 

The 4-H Center also houses the Allen Grove Rosenwald School. This school was used to educate minorities from the 1920s to the 1950s and today is a lasting reminder of the importance of education. 

The 4-H Rural Life Center is a vast facility, spanning over 345 acres and bordered by Little Quankey Creek. This picturesque site is a must-see for anyone interested in learning more about Halifax County’s history and rural life.

Through Little Wings, our Pre-K program, children can develop their own creativity and learn essential skills with hands-on materials delivered straight to their home. With the rise in technology use, it's increasingly important to get kids away from screens and back to nature. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can lead to a range of positive changes in children, including increased attention span, improved self-esteem, and enhanced problem-solving skills.

At Nature Connect, we strive to foster a love of nature in kids by providing programs and activities that allow them to explore and appreciate their natural environment. This exciting addition was inspired by two extraordinary women, Elizabeth and Elizabeth, who lived and gardened on Ridgewood Avenue in Charlotte, North Carolina, just a few generations ago. These two women made Ridgewood Avenue one of the most famous addresses in Southern garden history. 

The SEED Wildlife & Children’s Garden offers a unique opportunity for guests to learn about the natural environment, appreciate its beauty, and gain a better understanding of how to protect and conserve it. The garden is designed to support children’s exploration and encourage them to learn through play. With interactive elements such as a water table, a sensory garden, and a rain garden, children will have the chance to explore nature and become more aware of its importance. 

The SEED Wildlife & Children’s Garden is a wonderful way to honor the legacy of Elizabeth and Elizabeth, two extraordinary women who made Ridgewood Avenue in Charlotte, North Carolina one of the most famous addresses in Southern garden history. Through the addition of this outdoor exploration garden, Wing Haven Garden & Bird Sanctuary continues to offer guests the chance to learn about the natural environment and gain a better understanding of how to protect and conserve it.

We dedicate 20% of our sessions to learning, so you can always stay updated with the latest crafting techniques.

Get ready to create and network as these form the bulk of our sessions, a whopping 70%! You'll have plenty of opportunities to bring your imaginative ideas to life and also meet fellow craft lovers. Parents looking for an outdoor summer camp experience for their children should consider signing them up for the Summer Garden Camps at the Arboretum. Campers will get to spend the week unplugged, learning, creating, playing and exploring the beautiful and diverse gardens. With camps for children from preschoolers to rising eighth graders, there’s something for everyone!

Campers will gain an appreciation for nature while making friends and having fun. From playing games in the garden to exploring the unique attractions of the Arboretum, campers will find plenty of activities that will keep them engaged and entertained.

The Summer Garden Camps provide a wonderful opportunity for campers to take a break from their screens and immerse themselves in nature. It’s a great way for children to learn, grow and make memories with friends while exploring the beauty of the Arboretum.
