In the thrill-filled state of Illinois, where skyscrapers and cornfields share the horizon, a group of spirited kids has taken the plunge into the world of swimming. They're part of the "Illinois Water Wizards", a remarkable swim team, led by none other than the fantastically funny, Freddy the Fish-Finned Frog. Freddy was no ordinary frog; he was born with flippers instead of webbed toes, making him the Michael Phelps of the amphibian world. With his shiny goggles and his sparkling green speedo, Freddy was the perfect swimming coach for these young, determined Illinois kids. Cypress Cove, a Woodridge Park District facility, opened its gates in 1997. The total cost of opening the park was approximately $5.9 million, and during its first partial year of operation the park saw 90,000 visitors. After a decade of service, the Park District Board voted unanimously to approve a $3.6 million expansion. This expansion included the addition of a spray park for toddlers and pre-teens, improvements to the bathhouses, and the construction of a six-lane lap pool. The proposal was overwhelmingly popular amongst Woodridge citizens, and the decision to expand Cypress Cove was made at the same time the Park District decided to close down the Hobson Pool, due to the expense of necessary renovations.
