About Bass Art Studio

At Bass Arts Studio, it is our mission to recognize, affirm and support a child’s emerging individuality, and help strengthen a child’s sense of self through art-making. We create a safe environment where children are encouraged to playfully explore and experiment with media, engage in creative problem solving and learn to take creative risks. We are dedicated to assisting in the development of a child’s appreciation of beauty and sensitivity to form, line, value, shape, color, texture, rhythm and movement. In each class, children are exposed to the ways artists throughout history have employed formal principles of picture making and technique in order to translate their deepest feelings and thoughts into a visual statement. Class discussion centering on the analysis, interpretation and critique of art work is an integral part of every class. We encourage children to learn to articulate their thoughts and feelings about what they observe and what they create. We spark discussion by asking the right questions and supply children with the vocabulary they need to talk about art.

Drawing I Wednesdays, 4-5:30 (Ages 11-14)

Kids will learn to translate the world of 3D form onto the 2D picture plane. This skill-oriented class will provide the building blocks to enable kids to draw what they see. Shading techniques, measurement skills, value, proportion and scale will be learned in an exciting and fun atmosphere. Students will work in black and white and color using charcoal, pastel, ink and graphite.

Painting I Mondays 4-6 (Ages 11-14)

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of painting in oil based on direct observation of still life and landscape. Techniques such as color mixing, paint handling, and the creation of volumetric form will be emphasized as well as color theory and concepts such as movement, depth, space and line.

Painting II Tuesdays, 3:30-5:30PM (Ages 14-17)

This class is for students who have taken several painting and drawing courses and wish to deepen their technique and bring more of their individual personality to their work. Techniques such as color mixing, paint handling, and the creation of volumetric form will be emphasized as well as color theory and concepts such as movement, depth, shape, space and line. Group critique, study and analysis of old and contemporary masters of painting will be an integral part of this course. Students will work from still life and live model.
