Piano lessons for children younger than 7 follow more of a Suzuki approach, where there is an emphasis on listening and technique, but not on learning to read music. This can vary depending on your own child’s reading level. I most often use My First Piano Adventure from the Faber method, or Keyboard Kickoff from the Piano Pronto series. From age 7 on, I recommend the basic Piano Adventures and Piano Pronto method books, with student-chosen solo pieces encouraged once they reach level 1 or 2. I teach absolute beginners through intermediate level students, and any age adult is welcome. If you’re looking for a lot of structure and challenge, the Royal School of Music ABRSM exams are a great choice for motivated students.
