About The Children's Center of Brookline

The Children’s Center is an innovative leader in the childcare field, and has been for many years. During its period of growth, the center researched gender roles and implemented a non-sexist curriculum, featuring men, minorities, and older people in the classroom. This work was taken up by the film, “Sugar and Spice,” which deals with overcoming gender stereotypes in preschools. The center is proud to have been featured in this film, and continues to strive for creating an inclusive environment for all children. For 50 years, The Children’s Center has provided quality childcare to the community. Parents are actively involved in the center, from serving on the board, to sharing holidays and traditions in the classroom, to helping trim the hedges. The center’s commitment to researching gender roles and its implementation of a non-sexist curriculum have made it an innovative leader in the childcare field, and a model for other centers. This work was prominently featured in the film “Sugar and Spice,” which deals with overcoming gender stereotypes in preschools. The Children’s Center is proud to have been a part of this important work.

CURRICULUM

The Children’s Center is a play-based program, where our practices are drawn from current brain and child development research. Curriculum and instructional strategies are determined by the individual and collective interests and learning styles of the children. Activities are designed to encourage and promote successful relationships, the joy in learning and discovery, along with higher level thinking skills of inquiry, problem solving, organization, and creativity. The experiences in the program are integrated across all learning domains. For example, a child who is building a parking garage with blocks might also be using writing or drawing skills to make a sign for the elevator, or using problem solving to create a ramp for the cars. Art, music, and movement in integrated into the daily life of the child.

NATURE PROGRAM

TCC extensive outdoor space allows children to explore and appreciate our natural world. Children have the opportunity experience the four distinct New England seasons. Enjoying and participating in water play in the summer, leaf exploration in the fall, as well as snow play in the winter, and gardening/harvesting vegetables and herbs in the spring and summer. The nature program is incorporated into our daily activities. Children spend the majority of their time outside (weather permitting).
