About Institute of Contemporary Art/ Boston
Since its inception in 1936, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) has been dedicated to exploring the powerful potential of the arts. Its mission is to champion innovative approaches to art and to identify important new artists. In 1948, it changed its name from the Boston Museum of Modern Art—a sister institution to New York’s MoMA—in order to better pursue its mission. This new identity helped it to build a strong reputation and paved the way for other institutes and museums of “contemporary art” as well as artists’ spaces and alternative venues.
The ICA has presented contemporary art in all media—visual arts, performance, film, video, and literature—and created educational programs to help audiences appreciate contemporary culture. In the early 2000s, the ICA launched two acclaimed programs: Fast Forward, a teen filmmaking program, and ICA/Vita Brevis, whose temporary installations throughout public spaces in Boston earned critical and popular praise. In 2006, the ICA opened its new, visionary building on the Boston waterfront, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. This new facility allowed the ICA to expand their exhibitions and programs, increasing their audiences tenfold and acting as a catalyst for contemporary art in the city.
