About Community Boat Building

Since 2007, Community Boat Building has been working to create an exciting learning environment for low-income students in Boston Public Schools. Through boat building projects and coastal experiences, students learn not only the practical skills of boat building, but also gain knowledge in core academic subjects such as math, geometry, science, social studies, and literacy. In doing so, CBB helps to foster a greater appreciation for the accessibility and wonders of Boston Harbor, its islands, rivers, and history, while also encouraging spatial thinking skills.

Boston Public School Program
Community Boat Building brings to life critical academic subjects and skills — math, science, social studies, spatial thinking, reading and writing — with experiential learning opportunities for low-income children in Boston Public Schools. The core concept of the program revolves around wooden rowboats which we build with teams of 5-6 students each. In addition, we also draw on the outstanding natural features of Boston and its rich history to bring learning to life. Since its founding in 2007, CBB has worked with over 1,500 students in Boston.

Summer Program
Our summer programming weeks feature different building projects. In addition to that project, participants will spend time outside playing games and rowing on Fort Point Channel.

JR Junior Model Boat Box
Named for our founder, John Rowse, the JR Junior Boat Box is a model wooden boat kit designed to address critical mathematical concepts—our solution to the challenge of doing hands-on learning in a remote or hybrid learning environment. Students build their own (1”:1’) model of Community Boat Building’s Periwinkle Junior, utilizing the lines drawing, balsa wood, wood glue, and some basic tools provided in the kit. An instruction manual and videos developed by and for teachers are also provided as a resource. Model builders follow a design and building process similar to the one for our traditional 10' rowboats. The building process takes the builder from a set of plans and a few sheets of wood to a finished boat!
