About Glen Urquhart School

At Glen Urquhart School, we provide an experiential, place-based education that encourages our students to be passionate about learning. Our program is designed with the student in mind, offering multiple methods of instruction and opportunities to explore beyond the classroom walls. We believe that mistakes are part of the learning process, and that by building each other up, our students can be creative and think outside the box. At Glen Urquhart School, we strive to create an environment that fosters a love of learning from pre-k onward. Our goal is to provide our students with the tools they need to discover knowledge and be inspired to change the world with their ideas. By integrating all subjects and allowing our students to take risks and learn from their mistakes, they can become critical thinkers and develop a genuine passion for learning.

Pre-K
We begin the year in Pre-K with one priority that stands above all else, which is to build relationships with the children. With strong relationships providing a solid foundation, we can develop a warm, collaborative, and dynamic classroom community, where each child’s passions will be nurtured, and their love of learning will grow. Children are seen as individuals and are given opportunities to follow their instincts and direct their learning. At the same time, we provide the teacher guidance, structure, and challenges that children need to thrive and grow as learners.

Kindergarten
Our kindergarten environment is rich in intentional literacy opportunities. We teach literacy skills in small-group lessons, devoting one day of each week to journal writing, with the goal of having the children write simple sentences and stories. The children learn about sounds in words and strengthen their skills in spelling and handwriting. On the other days, we focus on the multiple strands involved in reading acquisition, which include phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, phonics, sight vocabulary, attention to reading strategies through simple text, and comprehension.

An exploration of self including the human body, life cycles, culture and tradition, and finding your own voice through music and languages.
