About Chicago Academy for the Arts
The Chicago Academy for the Arts is an independent high school for performing and visual arts that has earned national recognition. Designated a National School of Distinction by the John F. Kennedy Center, the Academy provides students with a unique blend of college-prep academics and professional-level arts training.
The Academy’s daily schedule features three blocks of academic classes and a flex period, followed by a three-plus hour immersion in the student’s chosen arts department. Dance, Media Arts, Music, Musical Theatre, Theatre, and Visual Arts are all offered, giving students the opportunity to learn the skills necessary for academic success, critical thought, and creative expression.

Theatre/Musical Theatre First Session: Theatre Ensemble
Theatre Ensemble classes serve to engage students in an ensemble mentality with a focus on empathy. In these classes students will learn ways to hear their own artistic voice and work alongside others to create art. They will start building their theatre maker’s “tool kit” with techniques and course material from different theatrical areas.
This four-week class will serve as the perfect primer for our Stage Combat workshop in session two as well as the summer program featuring Shakespeare and Musical Theatre techniques.
Music Second Session: Jazz and Popular Music
Spend your Saturdays making music in this exciting NEW program! Under the guidance of the professional musicians of the Music Department Faculty, learn all about Popular and Jazz styles of music. Transcription, improvisation, repertoire, ensemble skills, and musicianship will all be explored as you learn some of your favorite tunes! This program will culminate in a live performance for family and friends.
Dance Intensive
The Dance Department's Summer Intensive will focus on ballet, modern, jazz and contemporary techniques as well as improvisation and body conditioning. Students will also learn actual repertoire performed by the Chicago Academy for the Arts student community. Classes will be taught by Academy faculty, master teachers, and current working professionals from companies like Joffrey Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Giordano Dance Chicago and Visceral Dance Company.
