About Sarasota Youth Sailing

Sarasota Youth Sailing was founded in the late 1970s by Kathy Waggener, and began with seven students in the first class. In 1980, the organization was incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. Sarasota Youth Sailing provides a unique opportunity for children to explore the world of sailing. The original Clearwater Prams provide an exciting experience for children to explore the waters of Sarasota Bay. With singlehanded Laser Sailing, children can explore the waters independently. Sarasota Youth Sailing is a great way for children to gain confidence and develop skills that will last a lifetime. With the guidance of Kathy Waggener, and the support from the organization’s 501 (c) (3) status, children can be sure that they will be in good hands.

Tadpoles Level 1- Pre-Beginner Program

Pre-requisite: 5-6 years old by the first day of the session (no students older than 6 years old allowed in the class) Age Guidelines: 5-6 years old. Tadpoles is a “pre-beginner” program designed to introduce younger children to formal sailing instruction. Tadpoles meet five days a week, either from 9 a.m. to 12 noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and are designed to challenge the cognitive abilities of children five to seven years of age. Children who have reached the age of five before May 29 and who are capable of functioning within a group, will be admitted. Tadpoles introduce children to the activities of SYS rather than providing a broader “day camp” atmosphere. Children will be introduced to boats and water activities, including swimming, sailing and basically “messing about in boats.” Classes are taught in several different types of boats including our MaineCat and Precision 18.

Family Sailing

Join us for recreational sailing at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron / Sarasota Youth Sailing. We meet one Sunday morning per month throughout the academic year. This is a great opportunity to stay connected with fellow sailors and parents in a low-key and casual setting. Make it an all day event and schedule a private lesson with one of our coaches in the afternoon.

Private Coaching

Private Coaching is available by appointment each Tuesday and Thursday evening throughout the summer season. Cost is $100 for a two hour session. Additional coaching hours will become available on Tuesday evenings and Sunday Afternoons during the academic year.
