Alexander “Sandy” Lindsay was an inspiring figure in Walnut Creek, California, more than 60 years ago. His passion and curiosity for the natural world inspired him to start a garage full of local specimens and occasional wild animals, which he used to host informal classes and neighborhood hikes. His enthusiasm was contagious and soon enough, in 1955, the Diablo Junior Museum Association was formed, which included a governing board of directors. This was the beginning of the Lindsay Wildlife Experience. Today, the Lindsay Wildlife Experience is the country’s first wildlife hospital, a zoological organization, and an educational museum that specializes in native California wildlife. Its staff of veterinarians, husbandry experts, biologists, and teachers care for 5,000 wild animal patients, 70 animal ambassadors, and educate 100,000 people each year. It’s no wonder that this all started with Alexander “Sandy” Lindsay’s passion and curiosity for the natural world.
